A drop in a bucket…

So we have seen it… Masses of people chanted, balloons dropped, viewers were captivated and both sides have spoken. It’s like the shootout at the O.K. Corral using rhetoric as bullets to wound and hopefully kill the “opponent” in the minds of American voters. I must admit, seeing what one could imagine numerically as Moses’ exodus, was captivating and somewhat unbelievable for a day. This year’s election campaigns, or shall I say, glorified “Bloods” versus “Crips” sophisticated gang war, dominated my conversation and media inquiries for about a day.
Then conviction set in. Why was I overwhelmed and captivated? Am I truly seeing this from God’s perspective, or is this my perspective fitting in along with the rest of man? How does God see the “biggest” election in American history and the 90,000 plus who follow each side? Is God in heaven captivated?! Is He saying, “Man this is unbelievable! Obama in Colorado and McCain in St Paul, thats a ton of people following them!”? As I drew into scripture to renew my mind (Romans 12), my lens switched from captivation of what is being seen to adoration of Who is unseen.
I forgot and realized all in one setting that this world can be viewed two different ways. Take Niagara Falls… You can visit this majestic site and appreciate it at a distance but be overwhelmed if you were are actually in the midst of it (literally). Our call is not to be engulfed in the waterfalls of culture but appreciate it for what it actually is; simply a means by which to glorify the Lord who causes and will cause ultimate change. It’s hilarious, from the risen Lord’s perspective, they (the nations) are nothing but “a drop in a bucket” anyway (Isaiah 40:15). If I truly lived a life that believed this truth, compounded with the cross, would I be captivated by the limited power of someone’s speech to move a crowd (mere drops in a bucket)? No. I would be captivated by the victorious One, whose power, through me, eclipses any drop in a bucket no matter how historic and glorious it appears in the eyes of man.
