The Prostitute in the wall
The story of Rahab is fresh upon my soul. The story itself is intriguing, for instance, why did the two spies stop by her house? Why would the writer of Joshua make a deliberate scribing they stopped by a prostitute’s house named Rahab. The insight into the two spies and their motives is another write up for another day. Lets peer into The prostitute in the wall.
The Prostitute in the wall, this prostitute in the wall, as she readys herself for another day of her normal appears calm as the morning breeze. This Prostitute in the wall, was she searching for truth oblivious to the reality of her sin? Was she suffocating under the reality of her sin, today being her last day, thinking, either you do something, this God of Israel or I will, clueless to what that would be any way?
This prostitute in the wall who so hopelessly lost in her sin believed the best use of her body, created by God in his image, was to give it to men for their pleasure and her gain. An oscar winning liar, this prostitute in the wall she was, as she easily convinced the the king’s men who came searching for these spies that they were minutes too late. One lie told to embrace a truth, utilitarian? Did these means justify her perceived end?
This prostitute in the wall must have been waiting for an out of her emotional, endless, enmity with the Lord whom she knew she offended.
This prostitute in the wall knew something was off as she frightfully, frantically forced these men to hear her understanding and her plea.
This prostitute in the wall was full of terror and not just her but the city as well as she proclaimed we have heard of you and courage has left us all. Was this courage to live in sin gone, courage to seek the Lord in this moment present? See this prostitute in the wall knew of the Red Sea drying up and the mighty kings that were destroyed at the hands of the Israelite God. Where did she hear of such magnificent occurrences that occurred over 40 years prior to her prostituting in this wall?
This prostitute in the wall, did she live a double life? One of hearing and listening to the teachings of God by day and her vocation to her clients by night? This prostitute in the wall was she searching, praying, wating for an out but didn’t know what it looked like? Whether she had to lie, cheat or steal to get it, she saw an opportunity to escape.
Did God in his love hear the prayers of a walled prostitute, send two men to a women, a women aware of her sin but maybe knew nothing else given the culture, her standard, her nature? Maybe she enjoyed what she did, maybe she didn’t, but one thing is for the certain God came for this prostitute in the wall. God planned to redeem the story of the prostitute in the wall.
We are prostitutes living in the wall of our sin. We have all turned to our own desires. Like this prostitute, all of us have not stumbled into to sin but made sin our clients, in the words of this prostitute. All of us have used means to justify the ends of getting truth that in the end is self serving other than God exalting. But like this prostitute in the wall God sent two spies to redeem her but sent one savior to redeem us. He sent one savior to redeem our lives of prostituting ourselves to ourselves, of prostituting ourselves to the culture, to creation, to anything not him. God came and spied out the land, he came and fellowshipped with us, he came and covered us in his liquid red garment that poured from his veins, side and his head. This prostitute was terrified and it’s this terror that caused her to worship nothing brought about by man. Forty years later the terror of God himself then, would fall upon ones soul to realize the insufficiency of ones life in the moment as if it happend that day. Amazing that he is the same yesterday today and forever more.
So we too, if not for the Spirit of God, love of God, choosing of God, would have never seen the dread of our sin, the glory of God and would have remained prostitutes in the wall. God’s plan was to come for that prostitute in the wall, he came for his prostitutes in the wall. Praise Jesus that the Lord redeems The prostitutes in the wall.
